Mercury Outboards

Mercury Outboards. Mercury Marine is a marine engine division of Brunswick Corporation. Its main product is the production and sale of outboard motors.

Kiekhaefer Mercury was started in 1939 when engineer Karl Kiekhefer bought a small outboard motor company in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Kiekhaefer’s original intention was to manufacture magnetic separators for the dairy industry. The purchase included 300 damaged outboard motors. Kiekhefers and a small team of workers rebuilt the engines and sold them to Montgomery Ward, a mail order company. The engines were upgraded, so the buyer bought more. Kiekhefers developed engines that withstood the elements better than his competitors, and named the engine Mercury, using the popularity of the then “Mercury” Motor Car, while adopting the logo of the Roman god Mercury.
